Female E-Hailing Driver Installs Protective Metal Cage Around Driver Seat for Everyday Safety
Facebook

A female e-hailing driver in Malaysia has gone viral after a passenger shared a video showing a metal safety cage installed around the driver’s seat. The unusual safety feature has raised awareness about the challenges many ride-hailing drivers face while transporting passengers every day. The video quickly spread online, drawing interest because the barrier separates the driver from passengers seated in the back.

The video, posted on Threads by a passenger, showed a cage-like metal enclosure surrounding the driver’s seat. The passenger explained that it was the first time experiencing such a ride and said the driver had installed the barrier in her own vehicle to improve her personal safety while working. The installation completely separates the driver from the rear passenger area while still allowing her to operate the vehicle normally.

Driver Safety Measures

The protective barrier highlights the security concerns faced by many e-hailing drivers. The driver may often be alone for long periods of time and frequently be required to carry strangers who have never met them. For this reason, some opt to install extra safety gear in their cars to minimize the risks they may encounter daily while on the job.

The incident also has highlighted the need for safety measures in the ride-hailing business. Passenger verification systems, emergency assistance features, and driver protection tools continue to play important roles in improving safety for both drivers and passengers during every journey.

Questions About Design

Although the metal enclosure provides an extra layer of protection, it has also raised questions about its practical design. Some safety observers note that drivers should be able to leave their vehicles quickly if an emergency or serious accident occurs. Under some conditions, evacuation may be more challenging if a fixed metal barrier is in place.

One social media user said criminals will always find opportunities to commit crimes. The user understood why the female driver chose extra protection.

Another user shared that their father was robbed while working as a ride-hailing driver. The experience explained why some drivers prioritise safety.

It has been proposed that transparent acrylic partitions can offer the same level of protection but make it easier to move around the inside of the vehicle. These alternatives could enhance driver safety without causing undue delay in emergencies.

Attention On Ride-Hailing Safety

The viral video has once again highlighted the importance of safety in the ride-hailing industry. In addition, many drivers keep working on their own and are driving passengers between different locations during the day. Personal protection for drivers, who provide transport services to the public community, is an important aspect of the industry, as it is continuing to grow.
