Dua Lipa, known for her popular songs like “Levitating,” has recently sparked discussions with her outspoken views on the Gaza genocide. Growing up in London with Kosovan-Albanian roots, Lipa feels strongly tied to her heritage and her tendency to speak out on important issues is largely shaped by her upbringing and cultural background. She sees speaking out about important issues as natural, saying, “Speaking up is a natural inclination for me, given my background and heritage, and that my very existence is somewhat political.”
Political Views and Support
According to The Guardian, in an interview with Radio Times, Lipa shared that she supports the Labour Party but avoids publicly backing specific leaders. The Labour Party in the United Kingdom is a major political party that advocates for social equality, workers’ rights, public services like healthcare and education, environmental sustainability and strives to create an accessible and diverse society.
She explained, “I’ve always supported Labour, but I don’t think I’ll publicly go for or against anyone … because politicians overall just have a way of letting you down.”
Supporting Gaza’s Cause
Last month, Lipa shared a message on Instagram from Artists4Ceasefire, calling for attention to Gaza with the hashtag #AllEyesOnRafah. According to The Guardian, her post stirred up different opinions and controversy. It even led to a critical Israeli rap song that supported violence against public figures advocating pro-Palestinian views.
Advocating for a Cause
In the same interview with Radio Times, Lipa highlighted how she thinks carefully before speaking on political issues. She believes in using her influence to speak up for what she believes is right, even if it means facing criticism, all for the “greater good”.
Gearing Up for Glastonbury
Despite the controversy, Lipa is getting ready to headline Glastonbury later this month. Glastonbury is a popular music festival held annually in the United Kingdom, near Pilton village in Somerset, England. Known for its diverse musical performances, it draws fans from all over the world. This year, the festival runs from June 26th to June 30th, 2024.
Her latest album, “Radical Optimism,” released on May 3rd, has been well-received, showcasing her impact not just in music but also in raising awareness about social issues. Dua Lipa’s readiness to speak out demonstrates how celebrities can use their influence to bring attention to important causes.
