Dating has been a popular discussion lately in Singapore as a lot of people are sharing their heartbreak about not getting a genuine connection.

One Reddit user said dating apps feel “absolutely trash”, with conversations often feeling forced and lacking chemistry. They questioned whether the problem was Singapore’s dating scene or simply bad luck.

Dating Feels Too Status-Focused

Some of the commenters feel that dating these days is too money-orientated, too successful, and too status-conscious.

Some people skip the initial step of learning the person’s personality and jump to other aspects such as career, qualifications and financial information.

One user shared a different experience, saying a Tinder match eventually became a wife after 11 years together. The difference was that the conversations were not about salary, career goals, or status.

They highlighted how learning what excited each other, from interests like history, books, gardening, cooking, and technology, helped build a stronger connection over time.

Busy Lives Make Dating Harder

Singapore’s fast-paced lifestyle was another big reason brought up by commenters.

With crazy work hours and packed schedules, many singles simply do not have enough time to properly get to know someone. Some people end up filtering matches quickly because they do not want to spend weeks talking to someone who might not be the right fit.

Others said the absence of “third places” for people to meet spontaneously away from work and school or dating apps. It can be difficult to connect organically without more casual places to connect.

Genuine Connections Need Time

Even with all the dating issues, many users reported that it requires time and patience to find the right person.

One of the commenters mentioned that dating is a numbers game, and after 20 dates came an exclusive date.

Others said singles should stop treating dates like a checklist and focus more on having real conversations. According to the commenters, getting to know someone’s hobbies, passions, and goals can reveal much more than a job title or qualifications.
