Typhoon Saudel Brings Floods
Typhoon Saudel unleashed torrential rain and severe flooding across parts of China’s Fujian Province on Wednesday, swamping roads with mud and leaving vehicles battered in the city of Fuding.
Shocking drone footage shows streets caked in thick mud, damaged cars and debris strewn across flood-hit areas of the city on Thursday.
The city, in Fujian’s Ningde region, has been among the areas hammered by the downpours. Rainfall topped 400 millimetres in 24 hours at several locations, with floods cutting roads and trapping some residents inside their homes.
Fuding Hit By Flooding
Authorities suspended work, production and classes in Fuding from Wednesday as emergency crews raced to evacuate residents, pump out floodwater and clear blocked roads.
Saudel then slammed into Fujian for its third landfall on China’s eastern coast at around 06:30 local time on Thursday, hitting Zhangpu County in Zhangzhou with maximum sustained winds of about 23 metres per second.
Thousands Evacuated Across Fujian
More than 83,000 people had been evacuated across Fujian by Thursday morning, according to provincial authorities, as transport services were halted, construction sites shut and tourist attractions closed.
Saudel had already struck neighbouring Zhejiang Province twice on August 28 before strengthening again.
Heavy Rain Threat Remains
The typhoon was forecast to push westwards and gradually weaken, but further heavy to torrential rain was expected across Fujian and parts of southern China.
