Couple Weds Through Floodwater

A Philippine couple refused to let hip-deep floodwater wash out their wedding on Tuesday, wading through a partially submerged Catholic church to exchange their vows.

Footage shows bride Leian Lieza Galang, dressed in white and carrying a bouquet, carefully making her way through murky floodwater covering the aisle of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Hagonoy, Bulacan, north of Manila.

Bride Walks Through Flood

Galang and Gilbert Chico, both in their 30s, were declared husband and wife during an abbreviated late-morning ceremony attended by fewer than 15 people.

The parish had advised the couple to postpone because of rising floodwaters, but they decided to press ahead. The church had already been partially underwater for nearly a month.

Wedding Goes Ahead Despite Flood

Galang even had the train of her wedding gown shortened so she could move more safely through the water. The couple travelled to the church aboard a rickshaw with an elevated chassis before wading into the flooded grounds.

Monsoon Rains Cause Devastation

The wedding followed a month of heavier-than-usual seasonal monsoon rains across the northern Philippines.

Landslides and flash floods linked to the severe weather killed 34 people and affected more than 8.3 million, according to the country’s disaster authorities.
