Record-Breaking Rainfall Hits Bengaluru

At least 10 people were reported killed in the last 24 hours in Bengaluru as record-breaking rainfall and hailstorm struck the ‘Silicon Valley of India’ after days of scorching heat.

Footage filmed on Thursday shows heavy rain pounding the city, flooding streets and battering several vehicles.

On Wednesday, torrential rain and hail reportedly shattered a 25-year record for the city’s highest single-day April rainfall, delivering nearly twice the month’s average precipitation within just a few hours.

Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

Meanwhile, a compound wall at Bowring Hospital collapsed during the heavy thunderstorms Wednesday evening, killing seven people, including a six-year-old child, and injuring nine.

At least three more people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents across the city, according to local media.

Government Response and Weather Alerts

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, pledging an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh (about 2,101 USD) for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 (525 USD) for the injured.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, predicting further thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
