In Malaysia, a customer has been going to a morning market stall since his childhood and has been enjoying the same charcoal-toasted bak kwa sandwich there ever since. After 40 years this simple food stall is a memory.
The customer shared that when they were around 10 years old, their mother often brought them to the morning market. It was customary to visit a stall at Uncle’s bak kwa at the end of each visit.
The market has changed year after year, but the uncle’s recipe for the preparation of the sandwich has remained the same. His motorbike, soft buns, charcoal fire, and familiar flavour have remained unchanged through the decades.
Same Taste After Four Decades
The sandwich continues to be prepared using the same traditional method. Customers have long remembered the special aroma and taste of the buns, which the uncle still toasts using charcoal.
The sandwich is more than a food for the customer. It symbolizes a link with their childhood and their mother when they used to go and shop at the market.
In spite of all the changes that have been occurring around the market, the uncle has been carrying on his daily routine and serving the same foods, which have given happiness to generations of people.
A Familiar Face At The Market
The customer wished for the uncle to remain healthy and strong. His commitment has enabled them to taste a slice of their childhood again, through the familiar taste of the sandwich.”
Such small food stalls can play a significant role in community life due to the different generations that pass through them and with whom they share their memories. Uncle’s 40-year-old tradition of making sandwiches is a familiar routine to the visitors to the market. This is the story of a bak kwa that was toasted up with charcoal and the people who made it, who are still relevant at a time when everything has changed.
