A five-day-old baby girl in Kelantan tested positive for drugs after being admitted to a hospital in Kota Bharu, leaving medical staff shocked by the discovery. The newborn was receiving treatment at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) when doctors carried out a urine screening on August 6. The test reportedly detected amphetamine and benzodiazepines in the baby’s system.
Baby Tests Positive During Hospital Screening
According to reports, the infant was admitted to the NICU shortly after birth. While the baby was being treated, doctors ran a urine test and found traces of amphetamine and benzodiazepines. The result was then reported to police. What made the case even more shocking was that the baby was only five days old. Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe the infant may have been exposed to the substances while still in the womb. However, the circumstances surrounding the exposure are still being investigated, and no final conclusion has been announced.
Mother Also Tests Positive
Following the hospital’s report, police arrested the baby’s 30-year-old mother to assist with the investigation. A urine screening conducted on the woman also reportedly returned positive for benzodiazepines.
Police said the woman is unemployed and has no previous criminal record. Authorities are now working to establish how the substances entered the mother’s system and whether they were connected to the baby’s positive test result.

The case is being investigated by the Kota Bharu District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division. Police have not indicated that the investigation is complete, with further action depending on the evidence gathered.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the case under Section 31(1)(a) of Malaysia’s Child Act 2001, which covers offences involving child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The investigation also involves Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
At this stage, the mother has been arrested to assist with investigations, rather than being declared guilty of any offence. Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy, the mother’s medical history and the substances detected in both urine samples.

The baby remains at the hospital under medical care, while authorities continue gathering information about the case. The incident has drawn attention because of the unusually young age of the infant and the detection of two different substances only days after her birth.
What Happens Next
The investigation will determine whether the substances detected in the newborn were linked to exposure before birth and whether any further offences can be established. Police will also assess the mother’s positive test and other available evidence before deciding on the next steps.

The case is still being investigated in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Police are looking into how the newborn ended up testing positive for the drugs, while her mother remains under investigation following her arrest.
