Archers take aim in Kyrgyz-style contest at World Nomad Games

Horseback Archers Race Through Kyrchyn Gorge

Horseback archers raced across Kyrgyzstan’s Kyrchyn Gorge on Thursday as the Kyrgyz-style competition concluded at the sixth World Nomad Games.

Footage shows riders firing arrows at targets while galloping at speed.

Uzbek competitor Umina Dominova said the Games were about more than medals.

“For me, the Nomad Games are, first and foremost, about the spirit of the nomads and friendship between peoples. Everyone gathers in one place to share their culture, traditions and games, and communication is the most important thing,” Dominova said.

Kazakhstan And Mongolia Claim Gold

The competition drew 72 men from 33 countries and 45 women from 32 countries. Kazakhstan’s Abzal Tulybekov won the men’s event, with Saudi Arabia’s Bader Altamimi second and Kyrgyzstan’s Mergen Mirlanov third.

Mongolia’s Gunbileg Ganbaatar took women’s gold, ahead of Poland’s Anna Sokulska and Russia’s Yulia Lozhnikova.

World Nomad Games Bring Together Global Athletes

The sixth World Nomad Games will run from August 31 to September 6. The opening ceremony was held at Bishkek Arena, while the main programme taking in the Issyk-Kul region. The closing ceremony is scheduled for September 6 on the shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.

Around 3,000 athletes are expected to take part, with representatives from more than 100 countries confirmed to participate. The programme includes traditional sports such as kok-boru, wrestling, archery and hunting.
