Army Engineers Reach Tunnel
Nepali Army engineers intensified efforts to reach dozens of workers feared trapped inside the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower tunnel in Nuwakot on Sunday, after devastating floods blocked access to the site.

A 90-member army and police team reached the upper section of the tunnel at around 14:00 local time (08:15 GMT) and opened a hole measuring about two by three feet.
Rescuers descended by rope and called out but received no response. Heavy machinery and controlled blasting were then used to widen the opening.
Workers Remain Out Of Contact
Around 42 workers from Upper Trishuli 3A remained out of contact after severe floods struck the region last week. Rescue operations were also underway at several other hydropower projects along the Trishuli River.
Nepal’s disaster authority said 4,451 people had been rescued and 101 injured people were receiving hospital treatment. Hundreds of bodies have been recovered along the flood corridor, including dozens in Nuwakot.
More than 15,000 security personnel were deployed for search, rescue and relief operations, while helicopters and ground crews worked across areas where damaged roads, bridges and communications were hampering efforts.
Floods Hamper Rescue Efforts
The flooding struck on August 26, when a sudden surge of water, mud and debris swept through the Bhote Koshi system near Nepal’s northern border, hitting communities in Rasuwa before racing downstream through the Trishuli River corridor into Nuwakot.
Across the border in China’s Tibet region, seven people had been confirmed dead and 554 remained missing in Gyirong County. More than 2,000 rescue workers were deployed.
Preliminary assessments indicated that a high-altitude ice-rock avalanche may have temporarily blocked the Lhende River, allowing water to build up before a powerful surge was released downstream. Authorities were continuing to investigate.
