Iran Reports Civilian Damage
Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani on Tuesday detailed what she described as extensive damage to civilian infrastructure from recent US strikes, with transport, energy and tourism among the sectors hit.
“The recent attacks have inflicted severe damage on civilian infrastructure across the region. Tourism businesses have suffered crippling losses,” Mohajerani told a press conference in Tehran.
“In Bushehr, the Meteorological Centre has been almost entirely razed. The Bushehr Airport has likewise been rendered completely inoperable and will require total reconstruction. Furthermore, the maritime control tower at Chabahar has been destroyed,” she continued.
Key Facilities Suffer Damage
“Regarding the infrastructure, according to statistics announced by the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, twelve bridges and two tunnels have been damaged. The attacks inflicted widespread damage on key infrastructure: the Bandar Abbas railway, and the airports at Iranshahr, Semnan, and Bandar Abbas,” she added.
Mohajerani said the immediate priority was ‘reopening essential lifelines’. She added that reconstruction authorities had begun drawing up repair plans, while officials were seeking a temporary alternative to Bandar Abbas Airport because the work there was expected to take time.
She said the strikes on Iran’s economic and social infrastructure were intended to weaken the population’s ability to endure, but added, “our people, those who have truly read the history of this land, understand that whenever we have stood united, we have always been able to overcome.”
Temporary Pause In Fighting
As of Tuesday, neither the US nor Iran had carried out or reported any new military attacks for three consecutive days, providing a temporary pause following nearly two weeks of strikes.
US forces initially targeted Iranian naval assets and coastal defences around the Strait of Hormuz before expanding the campaign to bridges, communications infrastructure, missile facilities and military sites deeper inside Iran.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on countries hosting US forces. At least three American service members were killed at a base in Jordan and another in Iraq, according to the latest reports.
Talks Continue Amid Tensions
Trump ordered US forces to halt strikes on Friday, after mediators and regional governments urged him to give diplomacy another chance.
On Monday, he said Washington was engaged in ‘very deep talks’ and warned that the US could return to ‘strong military action’ if negotiations failed.
