Burnham Enters Downing Street
Andy Burnham crossed the threshold of 10 Downing Street for the first time as prime minister, completing the transfer of power from Sir Keir Starmer – but not before giving his mummy a very lengthy hug.
Footage shows Burnham finishing his speech on Monday before greeting supporters – including mother Eileen Mary Burnham – and then entering Number 10 with his wife, Marie-France van Heel, to applause.
Family Emotional Moment
His father, Roy, has Alzheimer’s, and according to UK media reports is unaware his son is prime minister.
The new Labour leader had earlier met King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, where he accepted an invitation to form a government. He then delivered his first address as prime minister outside the black door of Downing Street, speaking without the traditional lectern.
New Prime Minister’s Plans
He promised to announce measures addressing the cost of living on July 21 and said his first instruction in office would be to work towards ending rough sleeping.
The former Greater Manchester mayor returned to Parliament as the MP for Makerfield in June and became Labour leader on July 16. He took office without a general election.
