Cuba Accuses US
Cuba accused the United States of waging what it describes as an “energy siege” against the island, calling it the equivalent of a naval blockade and “an act of war.”
Speaking at the United Nations in New York, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez claimed US sanctions and restrictions have severely impacted Cuba’s fuel supplies and healthcare system.
Sanctions Criticised
“Against Cuba, the government of the United States is conducting a multidimensional, unconventional war that has been going on for almost seven decades and has become more brutal and ruthless in the last seven months,” said the diplomat.
Rodriguez alleged that Washington is blocking both commercial and humanitarian fuel shipments through sanctions, threats, and pressure on shipping companies. He also claimed the measures are aimed at destabilising Cuba and increasing pressure on its government “to pave the way to force the presidential order of an imperialist military intervention, which would result in a bloodbath and numerous losses of Cuban and American lives.”
US Responds
The United States has long maintained that its sanctions are intended to pressure the Cuban government over human rights and democratic reforms, while allowing exemptions for humanitarian goods such as food and medicine. Cuban officials argue the restrictions have had far broader humanitarian consequences.
