A Malaysian TikTok creator has shared a memorable experience from his recent trip to Japan after a helpful stranger assisted him in ordering dinner late at night. The traveller, Sathia Prakash, said he was struggling to find food after most shops and food stalls in the area had already closed for the evening.

The incident happened at around 9:00 PM when Sathia was searching for a place to eat. He walked around the neighborhood and saw a food ticket machine by a restaurant. Such a machine is widely used in Japan, but he had a problem since all the menu items were in Japanese. Unable to read the language, he was unsure how to place an order.
Struggling To Order
While Sathia was trying to learn about the machine, an elderly Japanese man realized he needed assistance. The resident of the area approached him and offered help. It started off as a friendly exchange and was made easier when the man asked if Sathia could speak Chinese.

The old man was the surprise for Sathia, as he could speak Mandarin very well. They were able to communicate easily and quickly because they shared a language. The stranger explained the different meal options and led Sathia in the process of ordering.
Helpful Local Steps
The man pointed to different items on the vending machine, including several different sizes of fried rice and a variety of choices of ramen noodles plus fried rice.

He asked the local man if the food was tasty before he bought it. The elderly resident told him that it was a popular and “yummy” option. However, following the instructions given by the guide, Sathia was able to make his purchase without further issues.
A positive note is sent each day for dinner
The cost of the meal is 550 Japanese Yen (approx. S$5.10). Sathia placed a 1,000 yen note (equivalent to S$9.30) into the machine and got the correct change with his food ticket.
He then went into the restaurant and ordered a new plate of fried rice with green onions. Later, Sathia stated that he had a good time at the meal, and he gave it a rating of 9. It was an uneasy trip looking for food that turned into a great day on the road thanks to the kindness of a stranger in Japan.
