The $2.50 Shop is a family-run hawker stall initiative in Singapore providing affordable meals to families in financial difficulties.

The project operates as part of broader community support efforts linked to SG60 initiatives.

Background and context

The concept was developed by a stall owner after witnessing a customer in distress who asked for affordable food for her children as she faced financial difficulties.

The owner said this experience played a role in her work with providing meals at a fixed low cost.

The stall, owned by the owner and her parents, cooks the food up every day, and by the early morning when it opens, they are able to serve their customers.

How the stall operates

The stall caters to elderly residents, people coming for medical visits, and families in need. All meals cost $2.50.

The family describes the operation as small-scale, with most preparation done at home. The owner’s mother, who is in her seventies, is also involved in daily cooking despite her age.

Community support and funding

The initiative is supported through donations and community contributions to continue. The money is spent on essential food staples such as rice, eggs and vegetables.

It is seen as “a goodwill gesture” and is honored as a positive initial step to bringing the Southern region’s needy families more affordable food.

Donors mention that a lot of these projects rely on caring and that others may not be able to be easily continued over time.

Help support the cause

The $2.50 Shop continues as a community-based, small-scale food distribution effort serving food at an affordable price to food-insecure people while maintaining the public’s contribution to the cost of meals.
