A Malaysian student has received praise after helping clear a path for an ambulance caught in heavy traffic. The video of the incident was made public online and stressed the need to be a good citizen and to work together during emergencies.

The video displays a crowded highway with multiple lanes of traffic driving down the street. Traffic was becoming increasingly heavy, so an ambulance trying to pass through the area was having trouble moving forward. A young student then stepped in and began helping to create space for the emergency vehicle.

Helping During Congestion

Witnesses said the student moved along the road and encouraged motorists to make room for the ambulance. His actions helped drivers become aware of the approaching emergency vehicle and allowed traffic to shift aside more quickly.

The ambulance was finally able to move through the traffic. The student did not have immediate details of the patient or emergency, but his/her efforts did assist to improve access for the responding medical personnel.

Civic sense is essential

When emergency vehicles with flashing lights, such as ambulances, fire trucks, and police cruisers, use their sirens and flashing lights, they should yield the right of way immediately, according to road safety professionals. Cooperative road users can facilitate emergency response efforts to people who need immediate medical care.

The student’s behavior was remarkable in that he/she was very aware of good civic behavior. Civic sense is actions that are of service to others, especially in public places, that are responsible. During emergencies, even small actions can help enhance safety and minimize delays.

Positive Public Response

The incident has also brought into focus the difficulties emergency vehicles have to deal with in a close-packed urban environment. The congestion can delay response times and pose further challenges for emergency services trying to reach the hospital, the scene of an accident, or any other emergency location.

Many countries are still promoting people’s awareness of emergency vehicle access and road courtesy. The video is an example of how cooperation among road users can help support the operations of the emergency.
