Temperatures are climbing in Vietnam through major cities all over the country, bringing one of the hottest summers the nation has seen in years. Recently, a video about a man frying an egg right on the street in the heat of the sun went viral in Hanoi. The peculiar image is a reminder of the extreme heat that prevails in many areas of the country.

The man is sitting on the side of a road with a tray of eggs, wearing a traditional Vietnamese conical hat. He breaks the egg into his frying pan, which still rests on the hot asphalt. Within minutes, the egg begins turning white and cooking without using fire, gas, or electricity.
Record Temperatures Across Vietnam
According to local weather agencies, temperatures in Hanoi and several northern provinces have climbed above 40 degrees Celsius in recent days. Experts say the surface temperature on roads and pavements can become much hotter, sometimes exceeding 50 degrees Celsius during the afternoon.
Authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities during peak daytime hours. Health officials also warned the public about risks linked to heatstroke, dehydration, and exhaustion caused by long exposure to extreme heat conditions.

Those working outdoors, such as delivery riders, construction laborers, and street vendors, are the most affected. Many are working even though the weather is hazardous because they need to keep going for their work and income.
Businesses Face Growing Pressure
This is also affecting businesses and public services throughout Vietnam in the extreme heat as well. The electricity consumption has increased significantly with the increased usage of air conditioning and electric fans for cooling. Overloads in some neighborhoods have been short-term problems due to the increased energy demands.
Some street markets and small shops have started changing their operating hours. Sellers now prefer opening during early mornings or later evenings when temperatures become lower and safer for customers.

In the meantime, the demand of ice suppliers and cold drink manufacturers is growing at a rapid pace. During the heatwave, many factories are working around the clock to meet the demand of ice products for the restaurants, cafés, and convenience stores.
Heatwave is Likely to Persist
The extreme weather is expected to persist at least another week, at least until it rains in northern Vietnam. Experts also say that due to a shift in the world’s weather patterns, heatwaves in Southeast Asia are becoming more intense and frequent.
Authorities keep urging people to drink plenty of water, wear light-colored clothing, and stay home until the situation clears up.
