Rescuers Reach Trapped Villagers In Flooded Laos Cave

Rescuers in Laos have reached five of seven people who were trapped for a week inside a flooded cave in Xaisomboun province, after days searching through narrow, waterlogged passageways amid persistent rainfall.

Footage from Wednesday shows rescue personnel celebrating after making contact with the trapped group, with team members shouting, jumping and embracing each other following confirmation that survivors had been located after seven days of continuous search efforts.

Heavy Rainfall Trapped Group Underground

The group reportedly entered the cave in central Laos to hunt wildlife and search for gold, but heavy rains quickly flooded the entrance and cut off their exit route.

One of the eight villagers managed to escape earlier and alert local authorities, triggering the rescue operation in the remote mountainous area.

Search Continues For Remaining Survivors

Divers have since navigated approximately 100 metres into the flooded cave system, but officials fear the two remaining individuals trapped may be 30 metres beyond the furthest accessible point.

Rescue teams are now working around the clock to pump the water out of the cave in an effort to lower water levels and reach them.

Mining Concerns Highlighted After Incident

The incident highlights the dangers of informal alluvial mining activities in the region, which have expanded in recent years as locals search for gold and other minerals in remote areas.

Alluvial mining—extracting minerals such as gold, diamonds, and platinum from riverbeds and sediment—has grown rapidly in Laos.

The government has since moved to restrict the practice, announcing a ban on new alluvial gold mining permits last year due to environmental and safety concerns.

Although Laos is not a major global gold producer, its mining sector has expanded alongside foreign investment, particularly from Thailand and China, with copper and rare earth elements also playing an increasingly important role in the country’s economy.
