Thousands Gather At Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque For Eid Prayers

Thousands of worshippers gathered at Jakarta’s iconic Istiqlal Mosque, Southeast Asia’s largest mosque, early Wednesday to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

Footage captures the grandeur of Istiqlal Mosque, with worshippers in white robes creating a mesmerising wave-like pattern across the expansive marble floor beneath the mosque’s 45-metre dome. The scene reflects a mix of communal gathering and quiet observance, extending into the courtyards, while surrounding streets in Jakarta remain active with festive crowds.

“This is very meaningful for me because this is my first time performing prayers at the Istiqlal Mosque, a historic mosque and also Indonesia’s national mosque,” explained an attendee.

“The imam was extraordinary, Ahafid, with such a beautiful and soothing voice. The preacher was also a professor, the rector of UIN Alauddin Makassar, and the sermon itself was truly remarkable,” she continued.

Officials Emphasise Unity And Compassion

Meanwhile, Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf remarked on the smooth and orderly implementation of the prayers, urging participants to keep the spirit of sacrifice alive.

“We must help one another without discriminating based on religion, ethnicity, or political views,” he stated, reinforcing the day’s messages of compassion and community.

Sacrificial Animals Donated For Eid Celebrations

The event was attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, representing President Prabowo Subianto, who is on an official visit to France. As part of the celebration, Istiqlal Mosque received 82 sacrificial animals – 63 cows, 18 goats, and one sheep, including jumbo limousine cattle donated by the President and Vice President.

Eid al-Adha, the ‘Feast of Sacrifice’, commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his willingness to sacrifice his son to God, before God provided a ram in his place. It is marked by the ritual sacrifice of a sheep, goat or cow, with the meat divided between family, friends and those in need.
