A Reddit post is gaining attention after users discovered a dish in Japan called Otchahoi that is labeled as Singaporean cuisine, despite not being found in Singapore.
The dish, known in Shibata, Niigata, Japan, was created by a local restaurant called Singapore Shokudo and is described as flat noodles stir-fried or served in broth with vegetables like bean sprouts, cabbage, and eggs.

Although it is widely presented in Japan as “Singapore-style food,” there is no direct equivalent dish in Singapore, and even the origin of the name Otchahoi remains unclear.
According to historical notes, the dish was inspired by memories of Singaporean street food, recreated in Japan after World War II based on recollections from the restaurant founder’s family.
A familiar internet pattern
The post sparked discussion online, with users sharing similar experiences of “foreign versions” of Singapore dishes found overseas, such as “Singapore noodles” that do not actually exist in Singapore.
Many commenters noted that dishes such as these tend to be culturally interpreted, migrated, and marketed, rather than being culinarily accurate.

Others joked about the confusion, one of whom said that he was surprised to be served “Singapore noodles” in Europe, only to find a curry-style stir-fried dish that Singaporeans are not familiar with.
Not unusual, just misunderstood
It is not uncommon, as food historians will point out, for “national” dishes in other countries to be versions based on memory, trade, or branding, rather than true local recipes.
For Otchahoi, its association with Singapore seems more creative than one of food, as it is based on historical references.
