“Is there any hope For us to land a job?” Singapore Writer Fears Creative Careers Are Slipping Away

The concern for today’s job market has become dire for avid writers of Singapore. AI makes writing replaceable, and it raises concerns within the industry. When writing becomes a universal form of expression, job market says otherwise. However, while the PR/Communication industry is still reigning across globally, a Singaporean writer takes to Reddit to express feeling excluded from challenging the status quo.

In a post on Reddit’s r/askSingapore forum, a communications graduate shared that she had applied for around 600 jobs with little success. The search began in February 2025, months before she graduated in July that year.

At first she was quite fixed on writing type positions, then later she broadened the hunt into marketing work and also public relations roles. Still though, even after that change of lane, it felt like openings were stubbornly hard to find.

Nearly a year after graduation, she said she felt increasingly discouraged as writing, marketing and PR roles appeared to be shrinking. While she acknowledged being in a fortunate position where she did not need to rush into employment, the uncertainty continued to weigh heavily on her mind.

At one point, she began wondering whether it was time to stop waiting and simply take “some random job” instead.

‘“It is weighing on my mind that I am taking this long,” she said. “I am wondering if it is just time to bite the bullet and find some random job so I can just stop thinking about it. Has anyone been in this situation at all? Is it worth it to just keep going?”

Writers say the Landscape is Changing

Under the post, many commenters said the writing industry has become increasingly difficult to navigate, with some pointing to AI tools reshaping parts of the profession. Several felt traditional writing paths no longer offered the same stability they once did, while others suggested branching into related industries or learning entirely new skill sets.

Marketing was frequently raised as an adjacent option, although some users noted that even those roles have become increasingly competitive.

AI and Offshoring Concerns Arise

Despite AI taking over the industry, there is a glimmer of hope for creative authors, thus it is premature to give up hope. Comments expressed that being innovative will always be in demand. Perhaps it is a possibility, and it serves as a reminder to look for writing opportunities in the correct locations.

Digital marketing and creative industries overlap occasionally; writing couldn’t escape from the stigma of being underpaid. Despite the job crisis, communication is still yet to circulate in job potency.

Some people argued the isue stretches wider, and is not just about AI alone.

A few commenters pointed at offshoring and shifts in hiring, saying firms are moving work overseas more often or expecting candidates to already have extensive experience before they even get an opportunity for entry level roles.

Another few suggested looking beyond Singapore or approaching media platforms and websites directly, especially those that regularly publish written content.

For many in the discussion, the graduate’s concerns appeared to strike a nerve — raising broader questions about whether creative careers are becoming harder to sustain in today’s job market.
