Visitors at Marina Bay were treated to a vibrant spectacle last Saturday as dozens of large macaws took to the sky. The event was part of a weekly gathering for local bird owners who practice “free flying.”

This activity involves training pet parrots to fly outdoors in open spaces and return to their owners on command.

A Community of Bird Lovers

The group, known as the Wings of Parrots Community, consists of Singaporeans from all walks of life. Many members arrived with specialized equipment, including colorful bird stands and GPS trackers for their pets.

While some birds remained perched, others soared high above the waterfront, their red, blue, and yellow feathers bright against the city skyline.

For many owners, these sessions are about more than just exercise. They provide a way for the intelligent birds to socialize and enjoy freedom. “These birds are like family to us,” said one owner. “Watching them fly freely is a beautiful experience that builds trust between the pet and the owner.”

Training and Safety Measures

Free flying is a hobby that requires months of careful training. Owners begin in small, enclosed spaces before moving to large public areas like Marina Bay or Marina East.

To ensure the safety of the birds, many owners use high-tech tools. Some macaws are fitted with small GPS devices that cost around $250 (S$335). These trackers allow owners to find their pets if they get lost or fly too far away.

The community also follows strict safety rules to protect the public and the environment. They choose quiet times of the day to avoid large crowds and ensure the birds do not disturb local wildlife. Passers-by often stop to take photos and ask questions, turning the gathering into an informal educational session about responsible pet ownership.

Promoting Responsible Ownership

The Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) in Singapore allows the keeping of most parrot species, provided they are cared for properly.

Events like these help to promote animal welfare by showing the importance of mental and physical stimulation for large birds. As the hobby grows in popularity, the community continues to welcome new members who want to learn how to care for these majestic creatures in an urban environment.
