Two giant pandas at a zoo in Washington, DC, have captured attention after a playful moment was recorded on video. The animals, Bao Li and Qing Bao, were seen interacting through a window in their enclosure.

Their behavior was described as “flirting” by the zoo, drawing interest from visitors and animal watchers.

A special arrival from China

Bao Li and Qing Bao are both four years old. They were dispatched from Beijing to the National Zoo in Smithsonian as an ancient tradition called “panda diplomacy.” This program gives China the opportunity to lend pandas to other nations as a gesture of goodwill and cooperation.

The two came in late 2024 and were unveiled on January 24, 2025. They have since become among the top attractions at the zoo. Giant pandas are rare outside China, and those in the United States are on loan from the Chinese government.

Playful interaction caught on video

According to a video, Bao Li can be seen quickly moving toward a small window in his enclosure. On the other side, Qing Bao waits and responds to his movements. The two pandas put their paws on the mesh and remain near each other.

Bao Li is very energetic, rolling around and moving along the wall, and comes back to the window a few times. Qing Bao lingers around and is interested in his activities. The zoo described this moment as a light and playful interaction between the pair.

Signs of future development

Zoo officials explained that such behavior may be an early sign of bonding. Giant pandas usually begin mating between the ages of five and seven. At four years old, Bao Li and Qing Bao are still young but are starting to show natural social behavior.

The zoo also noted that Bao Li is currently in a period known as “rut,” when male pandas become more active and try to attract females. During this time, he often makes sounds and movements to get Qing Bao’s attention. Although breeding is not expected yet, the interaction is seen as a positive step. The pandas’ activity has increased in recent weeks, and their playful behavior continues to attract visitors and interest online.
