Police have evacuated 25 hostages from a bank in Naples on Thursday after an armed robbery escalated into a tense standoff, prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Footage shows firefighters smashing a window to gain access to the building, while police officers signalled to people inside and later escorted hostages to safety.

Authorities deployed multiple units to secure the area, with streets cordoned off as the operation unfolded. Officers were seen surrounding the bank and coordinating the evacuation amid heightened security.

Police were called to an incident at a Credit Agricole branch in Naples around midday local time (10:00 GMT).

According to reports, up to 25 people may have been held inside during the incident, though officials have not yet confirmed the exact number of hostages or suspects.

The assailants reportedly escaped through an underground tunnel believed to be part of the sewage system. Nobody was seriously injured during the incident.
