Five Chinese tourists have been killed in a horrific road accident on Indonesia’s popular tourist island of Bali. The minibus lost control on a winding and steep mountain road in the Buleleng district on 14 November, Friday and fell into a ravine. Three women and two men died on the spot. Eight others and the minibus’s Indonesian driver were injured.

Local police said the minibus was travelling from Denpasar to the Buleleng area. The driver swerved to the left to avoid hitting another vehicle, but the turn was too dangerous.

As a result, the vehicle went straight into a farm, hit a tree and fell into a ravine below. The Chinese consulate has been informed after the accident, and efforts are underway to contact the families of the victims.
Investigations have revealed that the bends and slopes of the mountain road may have been one of the reasons for the loss of control. The difficult terrain in northern Bali has long been known to be dangerous.

New Questions About Indonesia’s Road Safety
The tragic incident has brought to light one of Indonesia’s biggest problems: its high rate of road accidents. A combination of traffic violations, poor vehicle maintenance and poor infrastructure in mountainous areas in the country of 280 million people leads to many deaths every year.

In 2022, 10 people were killed in a truck accident outside a school near Jakarta. The same year, 16 people died when a truck fell off a mountain road in West Papua.
Social Media Reaction
The incident has sparked widespread criticism of Bali’s road infrastructure on social media. Some have commented that Bali’s roads are so dangerous and traffic is so slow that even simple decisions take time.

Many have questioned why the tourist minibus had a number plate from another region instead of the local “DK” number plate. Some have suggested that the driver may have been tired from driving for a long time, which could have been one of the reasons for the accident. While some others also shared their experience.

Such accidents on the tourism-dependent island have also raised concerns about local authorities. Experts say that without improving Bali’s road infrastructure and adequate training for drivers, it will be difficult to avoid such tragedies in the future. Many have warned that Bali’s global popularity could also suffer if tourist safety is not ensured.
