In a groundbreaking move, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba has unveiled Victoria Shi, its first-ever artificial intelligence (AI) powered digital spokesperson. This innovative deployment marks a pioneering foray into the realm of virtual representatives for government communications.
Having an AI spokesperson raises questions about how political leaders and governments might use virtual representatives in the future. While AI assistants are common now, using them as official government voices is new.
AI technology is changing how governments share information and interact with people. Using QR codes to verify information is a smart way to stop deepfake videos and images. However, this also shows we need to be careful about how AI is being used by countries. If more nations start using AI in diplomacy, it will be very important to have transparency and accountability around how the AI is being utilized. While technological advancements should be embraced, appropriate safeguards must be instituted to uphold democratic principles and public trust.
As countries grapple to understand and manage the growing impact of artificial intelligence, Ukraine’s bold move has reignited calls for establishing robust governance frameworks. Ensuring transparency, ethical guardrails, and public oversight mechanisms will be paramount as more countries contemplate integrating AI into their diplomatic and governance endeavors.
