American Skateboarder Completes Epic African Journey

American skateboarder Jason Vanporppal became viral after completing a 6,000-kilometre cross-continental skateboarding journey from Uganda to Cape Town, undertaken to raise funds for a skatepark for children in a remote village.

The 26-year-old’s long-distance project, carried out over months on the road, aimed to create safe spaces for children through sport. “I’m trying to build a skate park for the kids, to give them more of a safe place to be at,” he said. “We want to get them their first skate park, something they’ve never seen in their lives before.”

Gruelling Journey Pushes Physical Limits

He described the journey as physically punishing and mentally demanding, with daily strain becoming part of the routine over the course of the expedition.

“My feet feel sore. I got a lot of blisters… everything in my bottom half is sore,” he said. “The mental side is harder — all the things that you think about.”

But after thousands of kilometres on the road, even his most trusted piece of equipment began to show its limits.

“This skateboard… it’s been through a lot,” he said. “It literally had to retire yesterday, unfortunately.”

Online Updates Highlight Youth Development Goals

Vanpoppal and his companions have documented their journey online, sharing updates and encounters along the route as they passed through towns and rural areas.

According to the skaters, the project is intended to support youth development and create safe public spaces for skateboarding in Uganda.
