Two pedestrians were seen rushing across the road even though the pedestrian light was still red, sparking a lively discussion online.
Many Singaporeans questioned why some people continue to ignore traffic signals just to save a few seconds, saying the risk simply isn’t worth it.
Many Say The Risk Wasn’t Worth It
Many commenters said they couldn’t understand why the pair chose to cross against the red light when waiting would have taken only a few more seconds.
One commenter wrote, “Really can’t understand these two people! Why can’t wait for few seconds and risk your life and others?”
Others pointed out that this kind of behaviour puts both pedestrians and drivers in a difficult position if something goes wrong.
Some also felt it’s unfair that drivers are often seen as being at fault, even when pedestrians cross illegally, and they called for a review of how responsibility is determined in such cases.
Parents Say Children Are Watching
Beyond the safety concerns, many commenters said adults should be setting a better example for children.
One parent shared that their child asked why adults were crossing even though the pedestrian light was still red after being taught to wait for the green man.
The commenter said children learn more from what they see than what they’re told, urging everyone to wait those extra few seconds and practise safe road habits.
Some Want Changes To Crossing Timings
Others felt road design could also be improved.
One commenter suggested that traffic authorities review the timing of pedestrian crossings, especially at wider junctions with multiple lanes, U-turns and turning traffic, where crossing can be more challenging.
Some also compared Singapore with countries where people frequently cross regardless of traffic signals, saying they hope such behaviour doesn’t become the norm here.
