Age is Just a Number
On 12 October 2024, 61-year-old Malaysian Tajudin Mustaffa took on the IRONMAN triathlon in Langkawi, Kedah, completing the 225km race in just under 16 hours. This challenging event brought together over 1,800 athletes from 51 countries, but it was Tajudin’s story that stood out.
His son Hakiem shared a video on TikTok showing his dad’s journey, which quickly went viral, racking up over two million views.
The triathlon started with a 3.9km swim at Pantai Kok (Kok Beach), continued with a 180km cycle around the island, and ended with a 42km marathon. Tajudin crossed the finish line in 15 hours, 54 minutes, and 23 seconds.
In a touching moment, Hakiem joined his father for the final 3km of the run, offering support and showing the strength of their family bond.
Courses Overview
The courses of the triathlon are as shown below, starting from swimming, cycling, and marathons.
-
Swimming course
The age group swim start will use a rolling format, allowing 4 to 5 athletes to enter the water at once after crossing a timing mat on the beach. After swimming, athletes will run 200m to transition (T1). The swim is non-wetsuit, with water temperatures around 28°C (82°F).
-
Cycling course
The one-loop bike course starts in Pantai Kok (Kok Beach) and goes clockwise along Jalan Teluk Yu, navigating the rolling hills of Datai and passing through local villages. Additionally, aid stations along the route are supported by community members.
-
Marathon course
The run course offers scenic views along Cenang Beach, with participants running beside the Langkawi International Airport runway on a flat tropical route that ends at Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa.
A Long Journey in Endurance Sports
Tajudin’s achievement at Langkawi wasn’t his first encounter with endurance sports. According to SAYS, he has been active in long-distance events since 1983, taking part in marathons, swimathons, Spartan races, and triathlons.
His interest in triathlons began in 2007 after he learned to swim in open water back in 1996. He has even completed 13 swimathons.
His regular training is a mix of weightlifting and cardio activities, like cycling, swimming, and running. He also practices hybrid training, which combines strength exercises with endurance workouts to keep him in top shape.
Family Support Made All the Difference
Family played a key role in Tajudin’s accomplishment. His son’s encouragement during the last part of the race and the presence of his entire family cheering him on were major sources of strength. This support helped him push through the tough moments and reach the finish line.
It’s important to note that this was not Tajudin’s first Ironman experience. He had participated in the event three times before, making this latest achievement another proud milestone in his long history of endurance sports.
Netizens React
After the video went viral, many viewers flooded the comment section. One user remarked on the Tajudin’s body shape, stating, “It shows his lifestyle in his younger days… ex-army, I thought.” However, Hakiem clarified that his dad was not an ex-soldier but was an ex-banker.
One user joked about the situation, saying he now understands why he can’t complete an Ironman like the 61-year-old, despite being only 30. He humorously added that he’ll wait until he’s 61 to try again.
Another commenter expressed admiration, saying that Tajudin’s accomplishment inspired him as he prepares for his first full Ironman at the age of 51. Hakiem responded with a supportive message, wishing him good luck.
An Inspiration Across All Ages
The TikTok video isn’t just about Tajudin’s achievement; staying active is important at any age. At 61, his strong build and determination have drawn comparisons to much younger athletes.
Tajudin’s story has resonated with people of all ages, breaking down the idea that getting older means you have to slow down or give up on big goals.
What is an Ironman Triathlon?
An Ironman triathlon is a long-distance race made up of three parts: swimming, cycling, and running a full marathon. Participants must finish the race within a time limit, usually around 16 to 17 hours. Known for their difficulty, Ironman events are often considered the ultimate test of endurance.
History of the Ironman Triathlon
According to Langkawi Book, the IRONMAN triathlon originated in Hawaii in 1977 when a group of athletes debated which sport—swimming, biking, or running—was the toughest. They then proposed a race combining all three disciplines.
The first official IRONMAN took place on February 18, 1978, in Honolulu, featuring a 2.4-mile (3.8km) swim, a 115-mile (185km) bike race, and a 26.2-mile (42.1km) marathon.
Only 15 competitors participated, with Gordon Haller being the first to finish in 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds. With growing interest in triathlons, the Ironman brand expanded by launching numerous races worldwide.
