After a three-month long fundraising campaign for the next iteration of the Singapore Fringe Festival in 2027, The Necessary Stage (TNS) is pleased to announce that the Festival will go ahead next year from 13 to 24 January. A total of $59,592 was raised from audiences, artists and foundations, with a portion of donations made before 31 March 2026 matched by Tote Board’s Enhanced Fundraising Programme. However, because the fundraised amount still falls short of the target of $80,000, the Festival will continue with its fundraising efforts, in the hopes that more supporters will step forward to donate.
“We have been astounded and incredibly moved by the public and arts community’s positive response to our campaign,” enthused Melissa Lim, the Festival’s Executive Producer and TNS’ General Manager. “So many people offered not only donations but also kind words of encouragement and did their utmost to share our appeal on their personal social media accounts as well.” She also extended her deep appreciation to the media, “who have been so supportive of the Festival since day one, and who did shout-outs for the campaign through articles and interviews.”

Lim adds, “The solidarity shown by so many individuals and outfits have affirmed to us that the Festival holds a special place in the Singapore arts ecology, and that our determination to uplift emerging and marginalised creative voices and issues, engage in difficult conversations through the arts, and emphasis on accessibility for all has been well placed.”
Lim has expressed a determination to present a similarly provocative and socially relevant line-up of works in 2027 while maintaining the Festival’s commitment to inclusivity as well as emerging young creators committed to socially oriented issues.
In the meantime, the Festival and TNS have launched another campaign. Funds raised for this campaign will go towards enhancing accessibility features of the Festival, as well as for greater support for commissioned young Singapore artists. This new campaign can be found at:
Donations above $10 raised via this campaign are eligible for tax exemptions and will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth’s Cultural Matching Fund (CMF).
First launched in 2005, the Singapore Fringe Festival is curated and organised by TNS every year and is a ground-up initiative that features bold, challenging and thoughtful contemporary socially engaged live art. Since then, it has commissioned and nurtured countless emerging independent Singapore artists and arts collectives and featured over a thousand Singapore and international works. Through its history, the Festival has established a distinctive identity in being a fearless champion of art that highlights urgent local and global social issues, ranging from wars, refugee crises, caregiving, climate change, the plight of migrant workers in Singapore, systemic inequality, mental health, and racial and gender discrimination.
It has also built a reputation for being one of the most inclusive arts events in Singapore because of its dedication to accessibility, incorporating open captions, audio descriptions, Singapore Sign Language interpretation, and relaxed performances for most of its productions, ensuring its communications come with accessibility features, and maintaining affordability of tickets for all.
When the Festival lost its long-time title donor, mobile network operator M1 Ltd, after 2025, TNS launched a crowdfunding campaign rallying the public to stand with the Festival through pledges of donation. The eight-month long gruelling campaign turned out to be a resounding success, resulting in the event’s triumphant return to the arts calendar in January 2026 as its first-ever ground-up Festival powered by the people. Many of its performances for that edition enjoyed sold-out houses, propelled by enthusiastic audiences who thronged the theatres for performances such as A Lesbian Love Story: The Musical by Woody Avenue and Invisible by ART:DIS and The Necessary Stage.
Lim also hopes that like the 2026 Festival, the 2027 edition will see groundswell of public support by way of packed houses “It has been so invigorating to witness the public stepping up and joining us at the shows in 2026, and we hope the same will happen next January.” She remarks, “We know many of you believe in the power of socially conscious art and how it can illuminate lives and change society for the better. So please support us-buy tickets, spread the word, and if you can, donate. Your contribution goes a long way to help us sustain this crucially vital platform.”
TNS is also actively inviting new partners and sponsors to support the Festival’s long-term future.
