After over 80 years of being cared for by a Sikh family, Ah Cheng, an elderly Chinese man, has died peacefully in Taiping, Malaysia, completing a four-generation story of cross-cultural family care.
Ah Cheng was thought to be abandoned when he was a young boy because of a mild intellectual disability and was never officially identified with any documents and was raised by the family who took him in decades ago.
According to family members, he passed away early in the morning after being taken to the hospital when he fell ill. He was in his 80s.
A Life Spent Entirely Within One Family
Joshua Louis, a family member who spoke to the media, said that Ah Cheng had been living with them for generations and was treated as part of the family.

“He was here with us for all these years; he was a part of our lives, and we treated him like family, and he never caused any trouble when he left.
Another 4th generation relative also shared that Ah Cheng’s care had been passed down from her great-grandfather to her grandparents, parents, and family.
She explained that the family never found him a burden even during the tough times and that they still cared for him in their daily lives, such as feeding him, bathing him, and helping him move around when he was older.

The fact that his birthday was on 31st August, Malaysia’s National Day, was another puzzling detail for many online, as his actual birthdate is unknown.
He was also part of the family tradition and was known to wait for family members to come home before eating, especially during Chinese New Year when families get together to eat.
A Farewell That Crossed Cultures
Although he had been brought up in a Sikh family, Ah Cheng had a Chinese funeral, and both his family and community participated in the rites. Local media footage revealed that his family and caretakers were in white as they escorted him to his final resting place.
At one point, the family encountered difficulties in identifying the body due to the absence of identification documents. After the media picked up the story, biological relatives surfaced, and the funeral proceeded smoothly. Many online shared the same sentiment that the story was a rare reminder that family is not just blood but years of care, routine, and showing up over a lifetime.
