A retired engineer in Malaysia is preparing for an extraordinary challenge to support children living with cancer. At 66 years old, Lim Shyang Guey plans to run 2,200 kilometers across Peninsular Malaysia to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer support services.

Lim, who just finished a 20 km training run in Penang recently, has been preparing for the year-long marathon for a year now. He has participated in numerous long-distance running events, but this upcoming marathon will be his toughest test yet in a charity run. The project is called ‘Run For Gold’ and is an initiative to support the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).

A Journey With Purpose

Jalan Gemilang started as a personal dream shared by Lim and his late wife, Goh Joo Lee, and was the vision of the two of them for 90 days. The young couple used to plan to walk around Peninsular Malaysia together. But all that was altered after her death from gallbladder cancer in 2024.

Lim decided to continue the dream alone and dedicate the journey to cancer awareness. He said the mission gives him strength during difficult moments and reminds him why he started preparing for the challenge.

His route will take him through several states, including Penang, Kedah, Perlis, Pahang, and Johor, before returning to Penang. Along the way, he hopes to meet cancer patients, survivors, and carers.

Raising Funds For Children

Lim hopes to raise RM600,000 (about S$182,000) for NCSM, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The funds will be directed to Home of Hope, a facility that provides accommodation and support for children receiving cancer treatment and their families.

He explained that many young patients come from rural or low-income households. Treatment is available at government hospitals, but there may be extra costs, for example, food, transport, and accommodation costs.

Preparing For The Challenge

To prepare for the run, Lim trains almost every day. He usually runs between 10km and 15km on regular days and completes longer sessions of up to 32km each week. He also starts running early in the morning to avoid Malaysia’s hot weather.

A support team will accompany him throughout the journey to ensure he remains healthy and well supplied. Lim plans to complete the run on June 22, his 67th birthday, with a final 78km run around Penang Island.

The veteran runner hopes his charity mission will bring greater attention to childhood cancer and provide meaningful support to families facing the disease.
