In a dramatic turn of events, two suspects were killed in a shootout with the police in Jalan Abad, Johor Bahru. The incident took place on the evening of 14 June 2024 (Friday), around 5:04 PM, as confirmed by the Johor Police Contingent.
Police Pursuit and Shootout
The shootout ensued when a team of police officers from various sections of the Criminal Investigation Department, including both Bukit Aman and Johor Police Contingent Headquarters, were monitoring a suspicious white Toyota Estima MPV. The vehicle, spotted in the Jalan Abad area of Taman Abad, aroused suspicion due to its movements. Upon realizing they were being followed, the suspects attempted to flee, firing shots at the police. The police retaliated, resulting in the deaths of both suspects.
Discovery of Weapons and Drugs
Upon inspection of the vehicle, the police discovered that the suspects had been fatally shot. A detailed examination of the vehicle revealed two pistols, with an additional pistol found on one of the suspects. Furthermore, various substances believed to be dangerous drugs were also found inside the vehicle.
Suspects’ Background
One of the suspects, aged 42, was found to have a substantial criminal record, with 38 offenses related to crime and drugs. The identity of the second suspect remains unknown as no identification documents were found during the police inspection.
According to Majoriti, Johor Police Chief Commissioner M. Kumar stated, “The incident occurred when a team of police officers from Division D14, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Bukit Aman, along with Division D9, CID Johor Contingent, were following a suspicious white Toyota Estima at the scene.” It was reported that the suspects fired shots at the pursuing police vehicle, prompting the police to return fire and eventually neutralize both suspects.
Ongoing Investigation
The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which pertains to attempted murder.

Johor Police Chief M. Kumar A/L S. Muthuvelu emphasized the importance of public cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of the community.

One user raised a question about how the criminals had access to firearms, prompting others to suggest Thailand as a likely source due to its accessibility of firearms.
Additionally, another user listed the number of shootings that have occurred in the city over the years, while another humorously suggested that the criminals took a break from violence in deference to the COVID-19 virus.
