Pakistan Pushes For Talks

Pakistan said diplomatic efforts were continuing to pull the United States and Iran back from renewed fighting and revive their troubled ceasefire agreement.

Speaking in Islamabad on Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tahir Hussain Andrabi said recent calm had raised hopes of a return to negotiations, although the security situation remained fragile.

“Dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable way forward,” he said, adding that Pakistan welcomes “all efforts aimed at preserving the cessation of hostilities and resuming dialogue between Iran and the United States,” and that it “will continue to play its role in this regard.”

Efforts To Restore Ceasefire

Andrabi said “negotiations between the two sides are still ongoing to normalise the situation, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, and in order to de-escalate,” stressing that Pakistan “is making its utmost efforts to bring both sides back to the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, in a way that helps remove points of disagreement.”

He urged Washington and Tehran to “exercise the utmost restraint and fully adhere to their commitment to resume talks at the technical level to implement the Islamabad memorandum of understanding.”

US Central Command said it launched a two-hour wave of strikes against dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guard targets overnight, including command centres and drone facilities. It said the operation followed Iranian attacks on US forces in the region.

Fighting Threatens Agreement

Iran said it had targeted US military sites in Jordan on Wednesday, while Washington said it remained open to a peace deal despite the renewed fighting.

The US and Iran agreed a 14-point memorandum in June designed to halt the fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but the deal has been repeatedly breached as both sides traded fresh attacks.
