Background: Leadership Change in Iran

A statement by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, was read out on state television on Thursday, where he praised a ‘new chapter’ for the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position of Supreme Leader of Iran on March 8, succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on Tehran at the start of the Iran war.

Statement on Regional Developments

“Today, with two months having passed since the largest military campaign and aggression by the world’s bullies in the region, and the United States’ humiliating defeat in its own scheme, a new chapter is being written for the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

Vision for the Gulf’s Future

“By the grace and power of God, the future of the Gulf region will be a bright one, a future without America, serving the progress, comfort, and prosperity of its peoples.

We share a common destiny with our neighbours along the waters of the Gulf and the Sea of Oman,” he went on.

Warning to External Powers

“Outsiders who, driven by greed, come from thousands of miles away to stir trouble have no place there, except at the bottom of its waters,” he warned.
