A short clip from firefighters at the Kuantan Fire and Rescue Station in Pahang, Malaysia, is blowing up on TikTok, and it’s not just for laughs.
The video shows firefighters sharing a simple but potentially life saving way to deal with a dangerous grease fire using common household items. It’s basically a quick safety lesson, but presented in a way that feels way more TikTok than textbook. By mixing internet humor with practical safety advice, the station managed to turn a quick demo into a massive viral hit.
In the video, fire rescue personnel set up a controlled flame inside a wok on a portable stove right outside their main engine bay. Rather than relying on traditional heavy equipment or fire extinguishers, one firefighter demonstrates how to properly douse a grease fire using nothing more than a damp cloth soaked in a bucket of water.
The firefighter soaks a towel, wrings out the extra water and holds it open to keep his hands safe from the heat.
He then walks over to the stove and carefully covers the burning wok with the damp towel. Once the flames are fully covered and there’s no air getting in, the fire starts dying down.
The firefighters also warned about one thing you should never do with an oil fire: pour water on it. It might look like a quick fix, but it can make things way worse.Water can make the hot oil splash everywhere and make the flames shoot up even more.
Instead, covering the wok with a damp towel helps cut off the air and put out the flames, without sending hot oil flying around the kitchen.
It’s a pretty simple technique, but knowing what to do in those few seconds can make a huge difference when a cooking fire suddenly gets out of control. The key is to stay calm, avoid throwing water at the flames and, if possible, use proper fire safety equipment.It’s a simple trick to know, especially if a fire extinguisher isn’t nearby.
Making Fire Safety TikTok-Friendly
With trending music playing in the background, the clip feels more like something you’d casually see while scrolling TikTok than a typical safety announcement.
That’s probably part of why it caught so much attention. The quick, visual demo makes the steps easy to follow, especially for younger viewers who spend a lot of time getting their news and tips from short-form videos.
People online also praised the firefighters for making an important safety lesson feel less boring. Instead of reading a long safety notice, viewers could actually watch the technique happen in real time.
Fire Safety Goes Social
More fire departments are jumping onto social media to get safety tips in front of people where they already spend their time.
Traditional safety campaigns can sometimes struggle to grab younger audiences, while short, relatable videos are much easier to watch, share and remember.
The Kuantan Fire and Rescue Station has continued sharing public safety content online, showing that a little creativity can go a long way when it comes to spreading potentially life-saving information.
