Mirror-Loving Monkey Surprises Malacca Family in Rare Home Intrusion

Unexpected Visitor With a Surprising Agenda

On Eid day, in a bizarre turn of events, a Malaysian family from Bukit Katil, Malacca, found themselves face-to-face with an unexpected intruder: a dusky leaf monkey, also known locally as a lotong.

But unlike the typical monkey raid for snacks or leftovers, this particular primate had its eyes on a household mirror.

The curious incident, which was captured in a now-viral TikTok video posted by @aunivthrh, shows a man attempting to ward off the monkey using a pillow.

Rather than retreating, the lotong appeared fixated on dragging a mirror out of the house, much to the family’s confusion and alarm.

Door Left Slightly Open, Monkey Walks In

Speaking to WeirdKaya, the original poster Auni shared that the incident marked the first time a lotong had actually entered their home.

A hill behind the house remained poorly maintained, attracting frequent visits from monkeys and lotongs, Auni stated. This marked the first time one managed to enter the home.

Auni said her brother had left the sliding door slightly ajar while heading to the car, giving the monkey a chance to walk in.

In that brief moment, the monkey seized the opportunity and walked straight in.

Theft for Interior Design?

Once inside, the lotong bypassed the kitchen and dining area and made a beeline for the mirror. In its attempt to carry off the mirror, the monkey accidentally knocked over a bed lamp, though thankfully, the mirror itself remained intact.

The family initially panicked, mistaking the intruding monkey for an aggressive macaque. Auni’s brother instinctively threw a pillow to shield a young child nearby. The encounter lasted around three minutes before they managed to chase the animal out, putting an end to its brief attempt at redecorating.

A Furry Visitor With Familiar Motives

Since the incident, the same lotong has not returned, but monkey sightings remain frequent in the area. Auni noted that her parents often discard leftover food onto the hillside behind their home, which might explain the increasing monkey activity.

Monkeys continued to roam near the alley, often digging through rubbish bins in search of food due to hunger. And despite the laughter that the video has sparked online, the experience left the family shaken at first.

A Light-Hearted Reminder

Though humorous in hindsight, the incident serves as a reminder of the increasingly blurred boundaries between human homes and wildlife habitats—especially in urban fringe areas.

Authorities and residents are urged to remain cautious and to secure entrances when living close to forested regions.
