A graduation ceremony at the UC Davis School of Medicine in the United States became a memorable moment after a medical student surprised his partner with a marriage proposal on stage. The touching scene quickly gained attention online after videos from the ceremony were shared widely.

The proposal happened during the school’s commencement ceremony held over the weekend. One of the graduates, Habib Salamah, walked across the stage together with several family members and his partner, Dr. Alaa’i Alshabrawy. The couple is both connected to the UC Davis School of Medicine.
Surprise Proposal On Stage
As part of the graduation tradition, Salamah was hooded on stage before stopping for photographs. Moments later, he suddenly reached into his pocket, got down on one knee, and opened a red ring box in front of the audience.
Alshabrawy appeared surprised before accepting the proposal with a smile. The crowd inside the ceremony hall then applauded loudly as the couple embraced on stage. More than 1,000 people attended the event, including graduates, faculty members, and family guests.

According to UC Davis, only a small number of people knew about the proposal beforehand. Salamah later shared that he had already received approval from Alshabrawy’s father before planning the surprise moment.
Couple Share Strong Family Bond
The proposal also highlighted the couple’s close relationship with their family members. During the ceremony, Salamah was joined not only by Alshabrawy but also by his older sister and their eight-year-old younger brother.

The family helped raise the child after the death of their mother several years ago. UC Davis said the emotional moment reflected the strong support system shared by the couple throughout their medical studies.
Medical Careers Continue
Alshabrawy graduated from the UC Davis School of Medicine last year and currently works as an internal medicine resident at UC Davis Health. Salamah recently completed his own medical studies at the university.
UC Davis also stated that Alshabrawy is of Egyptian background, while Salamah spent part of his childhood growing up in Palestine. The university later shared its congratulations to the couple and wished them happiness in their future together.
