While skateboards are best enjoyed at designated parks or other controlled environments, using them on busy roads is a recipe for danger. Such was when a viral video showed an individual recklessly skateboarding down Jalan Tun Sardon, a hilly and heavily trafficked road in Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia.
Penang authorities are now seeking help from the public to identify the person involved in this risky stunt. The incident was caught in a 47-second video posted on Facebook that quickly spread online, raising alarm over the safety risks for both the skateboarder and other road users. The video was first detected by police at 9:40 p.m. on September 6, according to Sinar Harian.
Skateboarding on Busy Roads Poses Danger
Southwest District Police Chief, Superintendent Kamarul Rizal Jenal, confirmed that the video that surfaced on social media is being taken seriously. The footage shows the skateboarder leisurely lying down on their skateboard and descending the steep roadway, putting their life and other road users at risk.
The case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Traffic Control Rules (Prohibition on the Use of Micromobility Vehicles) Act 2021, which prohibits using skateboards and similar vehicles on public roads due to their potential hazards.
Police Appeal for Public Cooperation
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the individual involved to come forward. “We are taking this matter seriously, and we request anyone with relevant details to contact us,” said Kamarul.
Members of the public who have details regarding the incident are encouraged to contact the Southwest District Police operations room at 04-8664122, or they may reach Inspector Noor Amera Mohd Nawi at 013-3312026.
Comments and Reaction
The footage has sparked a police investigation and elicited a wide range of reactions from netizens, with some praising his daring stunt while others criticize the reckless behavior.
One commenter warned the skateboarder against using such a dangerous and busy road.
“Don’t do weird things… This is a road for cars… You might not even realize it and someone could run you over, leaving you with nothing… If you want to skateboard, find a clear and safe place.”
Another expressed frustration with the skateboarder, suggesting that they would have no patience for such reckless behavior and might even force them off the road due to the inconvenience caused to other drivers.
“Sorry, but if it were me, I wouldn’t have followed you down the hill; I would have driven you right off the road… You’re the type who enjoys causing problems for others!”
While another commenter was both impressed and shocked by the skateboarder’s fearless attitude, acknowledging the high risk of injury. They humorously admit that they wouldn’t have the courage to do the same, likely freezing in fear.
“I really salute this guy… He’s got nerves of steel… Not afraid of anything… Even though he could get run over at any moment… If I were there, I’d be too scared to move until tomorrow.”
