On July 2, 2024, the Malaysian Olympic Council (OCM) unveiled a bold new design for Malaysia’s official attire for the Paris 2024 Olympics. This latest look features a striking black jacket with large yellow tiger stripes on the front and back.
A New Direction for Paris 2024
According to OCM, the new Olympic attire is a response to the mixed feedback on the design released on June 23, 2024. The updated look features a bold black jacket with yellow tiger stripes, symbolizing strength and bravery, reflecting the Harimau symbol for Malaysia’s Olympic team since 2005.
The gold-collared T-shirts will also have the tiger stripe pattern and display the MOM logo in the colors of the Jalur Gemilang. Due to tight deadlines, OCM received special permission from Yonex Sunrise Malaysia to omit their logo from the attire. OCM expressed gratitude for this support and thanked Y.B. Hannah Yeoh for her recognition of OCM as the National Olympic Committee. The new design aims to unite Malaysians and inspire the team for the Paris 2024 Olympics, from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
Malaysians React to the Paris 2024 Olympic Attire
Before the new design was revealed, Malaysians had already expressed strong reactions to the initial Olympic attire announced on June 23, 2024. The Malaysian Olympic Committee’s choice of attire was met with a wave of criticism from the public, who felt that the design did not represent Malaysia’s vibrant culture and heritage well.
Public Outcry Over Design
The announcement of the new attire quickly became a hot topic on social media. Many Malaysians expressed disappointment and frustration, feeling that the design lacked creativity and did not do justice to the country’s rich cultural legacy. A major point of criticism was the use of gold on the Malaysian flag, which many saw as disrespectful since gold is not part of the flag’s official colors.
Netizens also mocked the attire’s quality, calling it “low effort” and “cheap,” with some comparing it unfavorably to university projects. The use of mannequins instead of models for the attire’s display was also ridiculed, with comments like, “You should’ve hired a model. Now it’s twice as ugly.”
Additional Reactions and Responses
Further comments continued to pour in, with users mocking the attire in various ways. One post humorously stated, “Is this a family day shirt?,” while another added, “Are you guys climbing up the Broga Hill?”
Out of the many responses, Malaysian actor, Awal Ashaari commented, “We dress them in these and expect gold medals in return?” pointing out the attire.
Influencer Azfar Heri commented with disappointment, “I’m about to go on a rampage.”
