Madrid Prepares for Papal Visit
Madrid stepped up preparations ahead of Pope Leo XIV’s arrival on June 6, the first stop of his apostolic journey to the country.

Footage filmed on Friday shows banners welcoming the pontiff, no-parking notices posted along planned routes, workers installing event infrastructure, security barriers and signage across the Spanish capital, and tourists photographing fenced-off attractions.
Pope Leo XIV’s Spain Itinerary
Pope Leo XIV is expected to visit Spain from June 6-12, with Madrid as the first destination.
The pontiff will meet King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace, hold talks with government officials and members of parliament, visit a Caritas homeless centre, and lead a prayer vigil with young people in Plaza de Lima.

On Sunday, he will preside over Holy Mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi in the Plaza de Cibeles.
Pope Leo XIV’s June 2026 visit will be the first papal visit to Spain in 15 years. The last pope to visit Spain was Pope Benedict XVI in 2011, when he attended World Youth Day in Madrid.
