The lifestyles of Singaporeans and Malaysians are often compared. A video that has recently gone viral on social media has brought up the same old comparison. In the video, a man is asked what Malaysians misunderstand about Singaporeans the most.

In response, he highlights the differences in the pace of work, mentality and culture between the two countries. The video by The Bluebird Bros has spurred quite the reaction in both Singapore and Malaysia since its release.
Kiasu vs. Santai
The speaker in the video says that life in Singapore is very fast-paced. Everyone wants to finish work quickly there and time is of the essence. In contrast, Malaysians are comparatively calmer and more relaxed. In many cases, there is a “Santai”—or slow-moving mentality.

As a result, a task that takes 30 minutes to complete in Singapore can take days in Malaysia. This difference has led to a tendency to misunderstand each other’s cultures.
Culture Shock
He further explained that when Malaysians go to Singapore, they often face culture shock. The hustle and bustle of Singapore and the habit of pressuring each other to move quickly make them uncomfortable.

On the other hand, Singaporeans get annoyed by the slow pace of work when they go to Malaysia. However, according to the speaker, this is not a personal behavior. Rather, it is part of a system that has been developed over a long period of time.
Kiasu Mentality
The explanation of the word ‘Kiasu’ also comes up in the video discussion. Kiyasu mentality basically refers to the tendency to ensure extra security and convenience. Many times it ignores the difficulties of others.

In Singapore’s competitive society, it is seen by many as a survival strategy. As a result, although this mentality is often interpreted negatively, in reality it is the result of a social reality.
Call for Understanding
The speaker emphasized that both countries’ systems are effective in their respective societies. Singapore’s speed increases their efficiency, while Malaysia’s slowness gives people mental comfort.

Therefore, it is most important to understand each other without judging each other. He commented that it is wise to adapt to a new environment.
Social Media Reactions
After the video was released, there was a lot of positive reaction on social media. Many netizens commented that the speaker showed enough respect for different cultures.

Some said that his words were realistic and politically aware. Others cited examples and said that whether everything really needs to be completed in 30 minutes depends on the situation.

Overall, many believe that this video has created an opportunity to increase mutual understanding between the people of the two countries.
