2024 Federal Degree, Star, and Medal Awarding Ceremony at Istana Negara was a grand affair designed to honor individuals for their exceptional contributions to Malaysia. Much like Singapore’s National Day Awards, this ceremony saw the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim of Johor, bestowing titles such as ‘Tan Sri’ and ‘Datuk’ on deserving individuals.
A Drastic Reduction in Honorees
This year, out of 2,335 candidates, only 116 were selected, highlighting a strict selection process. According to Datuk Paduka Maharaja Lela and Datuk Azuan Effendy Zairakithnaini, the evaluation process was thorough, with His Majesty personally reviewing each nominee to ensure the highest standards.
According to Sinar Harian, the significant drop of 86% in honorees from last year reflects the high standards set by Sultan Ibrahim. He emphasized that awards would be given only to those who truly deserve them, no matter what kind of influence or persuasion might be involved.
Sultan Ibrahim Playfully Pokes Honorees’ Stomachs Despite His Serious Front
Amid the formality of the event, Sultan Ibrahim added a touch of humor by playfully poking the stomachs of several recipients as he presented their awards.
The lighthearted moment was further highlighted by the amusing sight of the individual holding the “dulang”—the ceremonial tray—standing next to the Agong. Despite the serious atmosphere, he managed to crack a smile while trying to maintain his composure.
This spontaneous act, caught on video, quickly went viral and sparked a wave of laughter online. Netizens were quick to respond, with one commenting, “I think that guy’s gonna be getting a mandatory workout routine as a next step.”
The humor didn’t end there. Another netizen remarked, “He’s a little joker,” Others also enjoyed the playful surprise, noting how the Agong’s antics lightened the mood amidst the formal proceedings.
While some users were cracking up on how random and spontaneous the Agong was being. “This Agong is so random haha,” and “The Agong of Johor likes to make spontaneous jokes.”
Maintaining Standards Amid Humor
Despite the playful moments, the ceremony retained its serious tone. Chief Secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar led the list of recipients, and Sultan Ibrahim ensured that every nomination was thoroughly vetted to meet the highest standards.
The event, which included Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, mixed tradition with some light-heartedness. Sultan Ibrahim’s unexpected jokes added a memorable touch, showing that even formal events can be more enjoyable with a bit of humor.
