Public Debate Over Mall Animal Exhibit
A video making the rounds on social media has triggered a serious backlash regarding animal welfare at a “pop-up” exhibit inside a Johor Bahru shopping mall.

It’s hard to watch: the footage shows a camel, a meerkat, and a wallaby crammed into makeshift enclosures right in the middle of a busy mall. For many, it raises a simple but uncomfortable question: is this really the place for wild animals?
Questions Over Exhibit Conditions
This setup is totally wrong. You’ve got wild animals sitting just a few feet away from noisy, bustling shoppers, with absolutely no way to escape the flashing lights or the constant chaos.

It’s impossible for a temporary setup in a retail hallway to provide the space or peace that these animals need. Honestly, seeing them treated like living store displays in such a cramped, artificial spot just doesn’t sit right with most people who care about basic animal decency.
Behavioral Observations in Captivity
The most distressing part of the footage? A meerkat caught in a loop, pacing back and forth in its small pen. Experts would call this a “stereotypical behavior” , a glaring red flag that the animal is suffering from extreme stress.

Seeing a wallaby shoved into a tiny cage only adds to the anger from onlookers. It makes you wonder: who approved this, and do they have any idea what these animals actually need to live a halfway decent life?
Calls for Greater Transparency
Enough is enough. The people behind these exhibits need to step up and explain themselves because the current situation is clearly unacceptable. We need real answers on who is actually checking on these animals and why on earth this was ever given the green light.
It’s time for mall management to realize that shoppers aren’t interested in seeing animals suffer for a cheap gimmick. They need to put animal welfare ahead of their profit margins and shut this kind of thing down for good.

@joeydiaries_ This is honestly insane. Went to Paradigm Mall in JB and saw an indoor petting zoo… inside a SHOPPING MALL. Loud noise, bright lights, constant crowd and animals just stuck there in small enclosures. People are literally paying to go in and touch them. Kids grabbing, adults handling them roughly, from what I saw there was no proper supervision from staff. Saw cats on leashes being disturbed, people picking up sleeping cats. This isn’t “cute” or “fun”. It’s stressful and concerning. These animals don’t seem like they have any safe space, just endless handling all day. So sad and honestly disgusting to witness.
