On 16 December 2024, Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris openly criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza and its recent decision to close its embassy in Dublin.
In a press conference held in a Dublin suburb, Harris labeled the move a “diplomacy of distraction” and reaffirmed Ireland’s commitment to advocating for the Palestinian people.
“Diplomacy of Distraction”
Harris condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, stating, “What about what [Israeli PM Benjamin] Netanyahu is doing to the innocent children of Gaza? This is the diplomacy of distraction.” He criticized the scale of civilian casualties, blockade on humanitarian aid, and destruction in the region, calling the acts “reprehensible.”
Harris expressed his disappointment over Israel’s decision to shut its embassy in Dublin, describing it as deeply regrettable but underscoring Ireland’s resolve to stand for human rights. “Nobody is going to silence Ireland. We know right from wrong,” he declared.
Israel’s Embassy Closure
Israel announced the closure of its embassy in Dublin earlier this week, citing Ireland’s “extreme anti-Israel policies.” The decision comes in the wake of Ireland’s recognition of a Palestinian state and its support for international legal proceedings against Israel over its actions in Gaza.
In a statement, the Israeli Foreign Ministry accused Ireland of undermining its sovereignty and engaging in what it described as “consistent anti-Israel sentiment.”
Criticism of Israel’s Actions
Harris was unequivocal in his remarks about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the death toll has soared amid Israel’s military campaign. He highlighted the suffering of civilians, particularly children, and criticized the blockade restricting flow of essential humanitarian aid.
“Do you know what I think is reprehensible?” Harris asked reporters. “Killing children. Seeing the scale of civilian deaths that we’ve seen in Gaza. People being left to starve and humanitarian aid not flowing.”
Ireland’s Stance on Palestine and Diplomatic Fallout
Ireland has long been an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights. It was one of the first European Union countries to recognize the State of Palestine and has consistently condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza. Ireland has also supported efforts to hold Israel accountable at the International Criminal Court.
The tensions between the two nations highlight a growing rift. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded to Harris’s comments, accusing him of antisemitism and dismissing his criticism as unjustified.
Despite the escalating diplomatic dispute, Harris emphasized Ireland’s commitment to standing up for international law and human rights.
A Divided International Community
The Irish Prime Minister’s statements underscore the broader division within the international community over the Gaza genocide. As civilian casualties continue to mount, countries like Ireland are taking a firm stand against Israel’s violations of international law, while others maintain their support for Israel’s right to genocide in the name of ‘self-defense.’
Harris’s bold remarks serve as a reminder of Ireland’s unwavering position on human rights, even as it faces growing tensions with Israel. The embassy closure is a setback for diplomatic relations, but Ireland appears resolute in its advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
