Iranian Representative Reaffirms Nuclear Rights
Iran’s representative to the United Nations on Monday said his country had the ‘inalienable right’ to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, during the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) conference in New York.
“I’d like to echo non-nuclear weapon states who emphasised on recognition of the peaceful uses, the right to peaceful uses as inalienable,” he said.
“We believe that, as we have expressed before, nothing should restrict their right to peaceful uses and participation in international cooperation with regard to peaceful uses without any discrimination,” he continued,
NPT Conference Focuses on Disarmament and Energy
The event, held every five years, discusses the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in the context of global nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful nuclear energy use.
Tehran Calls for Protection of Nuclear Facilities
“We need a new paragraph after paragraph 23, and it will be 23b, to reject the imposition of any UCMs or conducting any attacks against nuclear facilities, as well as the assassination of nuclear scientists. This is really needed based on the experience, the bitter experience that we have seen,” he added.
It comes following the conflict with the US and Israel. The Trump administration has insisted Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, while Tehran has always argued that its nuclear programme is peaceful.
