In a significant turn of events, Mohd Ridwan Mat Nasir, a 37-year-old technician accused of assaulting his wife at a Port Dickson hotel last month, faced charges at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. Ridwan was charged under section 352A of the Penal Code, which punishes those who assault or use criminal force on their spouse during a valid marriage with up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine up to RM 2000, or both. However, according to Sinar Daily, Ridwan maintained his innocence and pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani.
Arrest and Charge
Prior to his court appearance, Ridwan was arrested on June 20, 2024, at the Bangi Syariah Court. This came amidst public concern following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media. The footage depicted Ridwan’s heated altercation with his wife at the Corus Hotel in Port Dickson.
Details Leading to the Altercation
According to NST, the incident took place on May 24 at 9:50 am and garnered attention when a 30-second video of the argument surfaced online. Early reports indicated that accusations of infidelity triggered the conflict.
Upon arriving at the hotel, the wife knocked on her husband’s supposed hotel room door and confronted him, triggering the assault captured in the video, where he physically attacked her. Following the assault, the wife made a police report, prompting authorities to launch an investigation under Section 323/18A of the Domestic Violence Act 1994, which addresses domestic violence cases.
Legal Actions and Court Proceedings
In response to the charges, the court allowed Ridwan bail of RM2,500 with one guarantor and instructed him to avoid contacting his wife until the legal proceedings were over. The court set July 23 as the deadline for submitting required documents. As of date, the video has been removed from TikTok by the original poster.
