Residents Stock Up
Residents in China’s Hangzhou cleared supermarket shelves on Saturday as they prepared for Typhoon Bavi.
Footage shows shoppers filling their trolleys as shelves and refrigerated displays stand nearly empty. Frozen food sections have also been stripped of supplies.
Song, a resident, said he began stocking up on bottled water, instant noodles and ready-to-eat meals on Thursday, after reports warned the typhoon could affect the city between July 10 and 12.
“I’m worried about water and power outages. Typhoons come and go fast, so I only stocked up enough supplies for two days,” he remarked.
Storm Fears Grow
“My biggest concern is trees being blown over and cutting the electricity supply. Life would be really inconvenient without power,” Song added.
Hangzhou is bracing for flash floods, severe waterlogging and debris blown loose by powerful winds.
Authorities have closed the West Lake scenic area, suspending cruises, sightseeing buses and access to parks and museums. Crews have also installed steel supports around ancient trees to stop them being uprooted.
Transport Disrupted
Transport across the region has been badly disrupted, with flights cancelled at Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport and high-speed rail services suspended.
