Historic Battlefield Transformed

China has transformed the historic 1935 Loushan Pass battlefield in Zunyi, Guizhou into an immersive tourism phenomenon titled ‘Follow the Commander to Attack Loushan Pass.’

Footage filmed on Monday shows crowds in replica Red Army uniforms carrying prop weapons and charging uphill through red flags and pyrotechnics, alongside more than 100 actors recreating the fighting at Loushan Pass in Zunyi, Guizhou.

The experience went viral during China’s May Day holiday, when the scenic area said more than 1,000 visitors a day took part.

Visitors Experience History

“From beginning to end, it felt like we were immersed in that historical scene […] Our good life today is inseparable from these efforts and struggles,” said a participant.

Other visitors praised the reenactment for bringing younger generations closer to the history of the Red Army.

“Seeing children joining the Red Army, and even mothers who had just finished taking care of their kids immediately joining the Red Army – that really moved me to tears,” said an attendee.

“Children are very suited to participate in this kind of reenactment because it has great educational significance, letting them experience the hardships of the Red Army back then, and reminding us that our lives today do not come easily,” she pointed out.

Learning Through Tourism

The attraction also includes walking routes retracing the Long March, shooting experiences and a Red Army-themed restaurant.

Loushan Pass was the scene of fierce fighting in February 1935, when the Red Army defeated Nationalist forces during the Long March and retook the strategic mountain pass.
