Camels were seen getting their hair trimmed for Eid al-Adha in a unique Pakistani tradition, in the city of Karachi on Thursday.
Ali Hassan, a camel barber, was seen cutting artistic designs into their coarse hair: “When I glance at the camel, I instinctively know what to design. I’ve been doing this since my childhood. These scissors are my companion. I love the art.”
He charges between 10,000 and 50,000 Pakistani rupees for his customiSed work. The tradition takes place ahead of the annual livestock markets where camels designated for sacrifice during Eid al-Adha are sold.

In Pakistan, this type of camel grooming is considered a unique blend of art and symbolism, with artists creating elaborate patterns by trimming the animals’ hair in several stages using scissors, while some also use natural henna to colour the designs.
Eid al-Adha is one of the most important religious occasions in the Islamic world and one of the two major holidays in the Islamic calendar. The holiday commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience – and showed he was prepared to sacrifice his son, before God put a ram in his place.
Since then, animal sacrifice has become an annual tradition symbolising devotion. Muslims around the world celebrate the occasion by performing the ritual and distributing the meat among family members, neighbours, and those in need.
The festival also coincides with the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca, giving it special spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.
